What’s it like to do a student internship in an escape room? In this interview, a student shares their experience at Fluchtweg Hamburg.
Moin moin! I’m Norman, Fluchtmaster and web editor at Fluchtweg Hamburg. A few weeks ago, we met a young man who wanted to do a student internship with us. In the following sections, you can find out what came of it.
A student internship at a live escape company. Sounds quite exciting!
I interviewed our first intern Gerd about it.
Norman: Gerd, how did you like your internship with us and how did you come up with the idea?
Gerd: Overall very cool! I had my first experience with live escape during a class trip, and I liked the concept from the start. Through various channels, I then came up with the idea of doing an internship with you. 🙂
Norman: So ambition combined with good connections, seems like you did everything right. What tasks were you allowed to take on with us, and what did you particularly enjoy?
Gerd: I was allowed to take on quite a few tasks. I was there to welcome and look after the groups; explain what rules there are and what to pay attention to. I had the most fun guiding people through the game and providing assistance. When a group gets something right and is happy, I’m happy right along with them! Afterward, I would set up the rooms again so they were ready for the next players. That’s somehow interesting to see too, because people all leave their own unique chaos.
I was also always allowed to share my ideas and suggestions for improvement, there was always an open ear for that. Sometimes I was also allowed to familiarize myself with the booking system and manage Fluchtweg’s social media accounts.
Norman: That makes your range of tasks almost as comprehensive as my own! Did you feel comfortable with the responsibility you were given?
Gerd: It was just right. I found the training pretty thorough and careful, the employees were always open to all questions and didn’t leave me alone with tasks. Overall, the work atmosphere was also pretty relaxed and friendly.
Norman: And what does it mean for your future?
Gerd: I now know more about how such a young company has to operate in such a fresh industry. During the holidays, I’ll gladly come back even after my internship and lead a game or two. For me, these are first professional experiences that I enjoy and that help me grow.
Norman: Gerd, thank you for your time and all the best for your future path!
