Experience Historical Hamburg in St. Pauli

Moin Moin! Welcome to Hamburg St. Pauli – the gateway to a colorful and alternative world! Everyone knows the district of St. Pauli for its red-light district, its Reeperbahn, and its vibrant nightlife. However, St. Pauli is also known for its more than 700-year-old, very entertaining and diverse history, and has an incredible amount of sights to offer. We present to all Hamburg residents and city visitors 3 selected destinations that promise exciting Hamburg history.

St. Pauli & Harbor – Hamburg Free Walking Tour

The basic principle is that this “Free Walking Tour” through the Hamburg harbor and St. Pauli is initially free. Only at the end of the city tour do you decide how much the tour was worth to you – depending on how much you enjoyed it. The tour lasts about 2 hours, during which the team from Robin and the Tourguides  shows you the diversity of the old suburb St. Pauli, the harbor, and also the rather hidden streets that, for example, have been home to prostitutes for centuries or where the Beatles started their great career. You can find the exact contents of the tour on the following website: https://www.robinandthetourguides.de/en/tours/harbor-and-st-pauli
Even though many think that city tours are more for tourists from abroad, Nadezda, Michael, and Rosi from the Fluchtweg Hamburg team still learned loads of exciting and amusing facts about Hamburg that they had never heard before.

Free Walking Tour Hamburg

Did you know that…

Fish Market

The Hamburg Fish Market used to close its doors at 9:30 AM so that traders and buyers wouldn’t miss church service at 10:00 AM. Times have changed…

Pest House

After a plague epidemic broke out in 1604, the so-called “Pest House” was built in the area of today’s Annenstraße. In the following years, the sick were sent to the “Hamburger Berg”.

Church

On the Große Freiheit, among numerous clubs and adult shops, you can find a church. In the past, people went there to confess after partying all night, paying money to atone for their sins.

Bus 111

Bus No. 111 runs via stops “Fischmarkt” and “Landungsbrücken” to “HafenCity”, covering 16 exciting sights such as the Altona Town Hall, Reeperbahn, Elbphilharmonie, and Speicherstadt.

Our Recommendation

The tour starts with a ride on the harbor ferry. For this, you need an HVV ticket  . Keep about €1.50 ready for the single trip or get an HVV day or group ticket.

Want to play an escape game after the tour? Then book the 4:30 PM slot. The tour takes about 2 hours and ends at the Dancing Towers. From there it’s only about a 10-minute walk to your escape game.

Museum of Hamburg History

Museum of Hamburg History

If you want to learn how the lowland castle “Hammaburg” became today’s Hanseatic city and the proverbial “Gateway to the World”, the Museum of Hamburg History  is exactly right! Rosi, Nadezda, and Lhamo visited the museum and present you with the top 3 facts of Hamburg’s past:

Amulets

Amulets

On the Große Freiheit, among numerous clubs and adult shops, you can find a church. In the 16th century, the so-called “Wittenberger” amulets were widely spread as protective charms. These amulets represented salvation through a cult image. On one side, they showed the “Brazen Serpent”, on the other the crucifix with reference to the Gospel. The snake bites were equated with the deadly plague.
The Great Fire

The Great Fire

In the night of May 5, 1842, a catastrophe befell Hamburg whose traces are still visible today. A fire devastated more than a quarter of the city area at that time. A catastrophe of unprecedented proportions. 51 people lost their lives, the number of homeless was estimated at 20,000, the number of destroyed houses at about 1,700 in 41 streets.
Historicism

Historicism

Historicism tried to revive styles of the past. The Renaissance served primarily as a model for the furniture industry. The Renaissance was associated with the idea of a solid bourgeois culture that still appreciated the old craftsmanship. But the outward impression was deceptive. The apparent carvings were mechanically pressed in wood burning technique and glued to the furniture body.
